Because this is a research group, each student will have his or her individual course plan. However, to give the research group structure and to promote productive discussion during our meetings, there is also a syllabus.

Pattern library exercise

Read: Marcus, “Patterns within Patterns: Introduction to Design Patterns.

Peruse LabelPatterns.org pattern library

Assignment: By October 10, 9:00 a.m. submit via GoPost 10 titles for patterns for training servers in the Steak & Ale restaurant chain. Annotate each pattern title with a sentence or two. In addition, write one of these patterns.

Week 4

Read Farkas, Larson, & Naranjo, “LabelPatterns.Org: A Comprehensive Pattern Library for Consumer-Decision Labels.”

Week 5

October 25 (Class 3)

Discussion of pattern library planning documents

Assignment: Come to class prepared to discuss a possible pattern library you might plan/build. Envision this as a real-world project, not a school assignment. Envision a pattern library with at least 15 patterns.

Week 6

November 1 (Class 4)

The universe of pattern libraries

Assignment: By October 31, 9:00 a.m, submit via GoPost a 2-3 page proposal for your pattern library planning document.

Week 7

November 8 (Class 5)

Findability: Initial access and pattern-to-pattern linking

Examine the findability features in LabelPatterns.org Assignment: By October 7, 9:00 a.m. submit via GoPost 10 or more pattern titles (with a one paragraph elaboration) for designing home page banners. Group the titles into categories and indicate hyperlinks to related patterns

Week 8

November 15 (Class 6)

The design of patterns

Assignment: By November 14, 9:00 a.m. submit via GoPost two (or more) closely related patterns plus an alternative design that employs one broader pattern instead of the two.
