My research focus falls in the area of sociolinguistics.

I am interested in linguistic variation and how that relates to the functions of language in marking identity, status, group solidarity and cultural values.

Some of the research projects I have conducted have explored social networks and the Northern Cities Chain Shift, attitudes to and perceptions of varieties of English, the imitation of dialects and perceptions of globalization.

* Read the UW Today article about the Seattle to Spokane mapping perceptions of English in Washington State project.
