INTRODUCTION

This web site is designed for health care providers and students interested in basic geriatric medicine, with an emphasis on emergency care of older adults. We have not attempted to provide a comprehensive review of geriatrics, but have focused on issues that may be relevant to the initial assessment and management of older adults in times of crisis. This material was originally based on a syllabus we designed for The University of Washington School of Medicine Paramedic Training Program, but we believe that other health care professionals including physicians and medical students may find it relevant to their needs as well. For each topic except Demographics and Statistics, there is a case presentation or two illustrating some of the points discussed in the accompanying didactic material.

THE AUTHORS

We are board-certified in internal medicine, and have received a certificate of added qualifications in geriatric medicine. We received fellowship training in geriatric medicine at the University of Washington. We are currently faculty members in the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Our primary mission is to provide medical care for frail elderly people and to teach the principles of geriatric medicine to medical students and physicians who will be caring for older people in their practices.
