Deep grew up in Kolkata, India, completing his schooling till 12th grade there (St. Xavier's and LaMarts). He obtained his B.A. from Colgate University (NY) and PhD from MIT. He was then a post-doc at UC Berkeley before joining the UW physics department in Fall 2007. He lives in Seattle with his wife and two children.
