Row of Children

Parents & Caregivers

The study will last about one year and include two types of visits that will include you and your children.

Program Visits

During the study, a trained Community Health Worker (CHW) will meet with you and your child 9 times over 6 months. Each visit will last 5 to 30 minutes, or about 2-3 hours total. In the first visit, we will give you information about fruit drinks and cavities. In the second visit, we will introduce sugar-free fruit drinks. During the third to fifth visits, we will work with you to improve ways to get your child to accept healthier drinks. After that, there will be 4 very short check-ins to assess your progress in the program.

Data Collection Visits

We will ask you and your child to come to the clinic 5 times. These visits will allow our team to collect data to assess whether the program is working. All 5 data collection visits will take place in the local health clinic. There are 5 main research activities at each visit:

  1. Collect 24-hour food recall data: A trained staff person will ask questions about your child’s diet in the last 24 hours.
  2. Administer fruit drink survey: A trained staff person will ask questions about diet in general.
  3. Administer hair survey including measuring weight
  4. Collect hair sample from caregivers and children
  5. Collect plaque sample from the children (plaque is a sticky deposit found on teeth)

Each clinic visit will last about 1 hour. You will receive a $25 store gift card per child for each clinic visit. If you and your child make all 5 clinic visits, you will receive a $50 bonus gift card for each child at the last clinic visit ($175 total per child if you complete all 5 clinic visits).
