Event Specific Prevention (ESP)
In contrast to general prevention strategies which target ongoing problematic
behavior, ESP is a new paradigm in prevention which is intented to target
very specific high risk events. For example, extreme drinking in college students
is associated with 21st birthdays, Spring Break, specific football games,
New Years eve, etc. Knowing in advance when these events occur allows for
precise timing of interventions aimed at reducing risk for a concrete window
of time. If we knew when a bank was going to be robbed, wouldn't we
find a way to prevent it?
