Voice of the Lakers Silenced by Brain Injury

Chick Hearn, longtime announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, died today. He was 85 years old. Mr. Hearn fell several days ago and hit his head. Mr. Hearn had two operations to stop bleeding and to remove a blood clot from his brain. Unfortunately, these operations did not stabilize his condition. Mr. Hearn fell into a coma and never regained consciousness before he passed away.

Mr. Hearn announced 3,338 consecutive games for the Lakers over 36 years. He is credited with introducing such basketball phrases as "slam dunk" and "air ball."
