Terrorist Organizations

Abu Nidal Organization, headquartered first in Iraq, then Syria, now Libya.

Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA), founded in 1959, seeks to create an independent homeland in Spain's Basque region.

Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement). Emerged in 1987 from the Palestinian branch of Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas pursues, often by violent means, a Palestinian state in place of Israel.

Kach and Kahane Chai. Stated goal is to restore the biblical state of Israel and to halt the peace process in Palestine. A right-wing extremist who was a member of an offshoot organization assassinated Prime Minister Rabin in Nov. 1995 to stop his plans for withdrawal from parts of the West Bank.

Provisional IRA. Radical group formed in 1969 as secret armed wing of Sinn Fein, seeking to remove British troops from Northern Ireland and unify Ireland.

Sendero Luminiso (Shining Path). Guerrilla movement formed during late 1960s whose stated goals are to rid Peru of foreign influences, destroy extant Peruvian institutions and replace them with a peasant revolutionary regime.
