I expect all written work with citations to use a standard format, CBE/CSE. A basic guide for the format can be found here. For really complex issues, you can go to the reference desk at the library and ask to see the CSE Style Guide, a book with limited checkout.
Note that when you download a pdf of an article from the library webpage, you should still cite it like a printed journal article, unless it is from an online-only journal.
It might seem like an unnecessary hoop for you to jump through, but there are a number of good reasons for being very particular about this. Any official work you submit for publication will ask for a specific citation format that you must adhere to; it is good practice to learn to follow directions and pay attention to the details. It also helps other interpret what your citations are if they are reported in a familiar format.
