Biographical Sketch

Lizabeth (Betsy) Wilson is the Dean of University Libraries at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. The University Libraries ranks among the largest academic libraries in the United States with collections of more than 6 million volumes. The Libraries also leads in the implementation of online systems and the use of electronic information. From 1992 through 2000, she was the Associate Director of Libraries for Research and Instructional Services at the University of Washington. Prior to joining the University of Washington in 1992, she was the Assistant Director of Libraries for Undergraduate and Instructional Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

She was a co-founder of the award-winning UWired program at the University of Washington since its inception in 1994. UWired is a campus collaboration committed to helping educators and students incorporate meaningful applications of information technology and information literacy education into teaching and learning.

Betsy Wilson has published and presented widely on information literacy, teaching, learning, and technology; educational collaborations; and assessment and evaluation. She has held numerous leadership positions in the American Library Association and the Association of College and Research Libraries, including chair of the ACRL Instruction Section, member of ALA Council, and ACRL President (2000-2001). As ACRL President she is promoting "Community and Collaboration" in libraries. She helped establish the ACRL Institute for Information Literacy which is "dedicated to playing a leadership role in assisting individuals and institutions in integrating information literacy throughout the educational process."

She is chair of the Board of Trustees of OCLC, a nonprofit, membership organization serving 36,000 libraries and knowledge institutions worldwide and dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing information costs.

She is a member of the Association of Research Libraries Board and of the Digital Library Federation Executive Committee. She is past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Greater Western Library Alliance, a consortium of 30 research libraries located in the greater Midwest and Western United States, and a past member of the Executive Committee of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a library consortium serving 30 higher education institutions throughout Oregon and Washington.

Betsy Wilson is the recipient of the 1995 Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award and the 2000 Margaret E. Monroe Award. With her UWired colleagues, she received the inaugural 2000 EDUCAUSE Award for Systemic Progress in Teaching and Learning. Her library was selected as the 2004 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award recipient. She holds an M.L.S. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1978) and a B.A. from Northwestern University (1977).
