Molecular Evolution Computer Labs
Links to computer lab excersises are on the left. For each week, provide a short write-up for the computer lab. The write up should be 1-2 pages in length. The write up should describe what you did during the exercise, probelms encountered, and any relevant results. Do not print out long pages of output from the programs. You may want to make somr screen shots to show some results - use the program "Grab" (in the Applications/Utilities folder).
Project: Choose a topic in molecular evolution and perform an analysis using sequences from Genbank or a genome project. Please talk with Nathan or me about your project prior to initiating analyses. You will have two computer lab sessions to work on the project. Please do not copy the results from a published paper, as this will be easy to detect. You can use any of the methods we will perform in the lab sections, or any other methods you discover. You should then write up your results in the form of a research paper including references. There should be an introduction, description of methods, results and discussion. You will give a short presentation of your project during the last lab section. Some sample topics could include: 1. A phylogeny for a group of organisms that interest you 2. Tests of adaptive evolution for interesting genes 3. Population structure analysis 4. Analysis of gene duplications |
