The Route to the Top

Route to the top

The red line traces the route to the top. It starts at Camp Muir, where we left at about 1:30 a.m. We crossed the Cowlitz Glacier, then climbed up Cathedral Gap, threading through the Cathedral Rocks. We then traversed the Ingraham Glacier, where we took our first break at Ingraham Flats, about 11,200 ft. After a 15 minute break we crossed the nose of Disappointment Cleaver and then climbed through a series of switch backs up the cleaver. The sun rose over the Cascades as we climbed up the Cleaver. We reached the top of the Cleaver, 12,200 ft., at about 7:00 a.m. and took another break. We worked through an icefall at the the top of the Ingraham Glacier and then traversed to the northeast onto the Emmons glacier and then traversed back above the Ingraham Glacier. There we took our final break at about 8:30, at 13,400 ft. From here we climbed straight up to the east crater rim at the top, which we reached at about 10 a.m. At the summit crater we rested about 20 minutes. We retraced our way back down the same route, stopping at the top of Disappointment Cleaver and Ingraham Flats, arriving at Camp Muir at about 2:00 p.m. We packed up and left for Paradise at 3:00 and arrived there at about 5:00 p.m.
