Kenky\u016bsha&#8217;s Japanese-English dictionary gives the following meaning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>get; take; obtain; do [cheat] \u300asb out of sth\u300b; squeeze [get, wheedle] \u300amoney\u300b out of sb; extort [wheedle] \u300amoney\u300b from sb; swindle \u300asb\u300b (of \uff03his [her] money); rustle \u300acattle\u300b; \u300a\u6587\uff65\u6cd5\u300b take unjust possession of sth; purloin; \u300a\u53e3\u300b wangle; #\u300a\u53e3\u300b finagle; mooch \u300aa drink\u300b<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This sense, however, seems to obtain primarily when used by itself and taking an object, as in the following example sentence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u5f7c\u306f\u59b9\u304b\u3089 1,000 \u5186(\u3092)\u305b\u3057\u3081\u305f.\u3000He has done his sister out of \u00a51,000.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is a more common (and easier) meaning in prewar texts, where it usually is the verb &#8220;suru&#8221; in the mizenkei form &#8220;se&#8221; with the causative auxiliary verb &#8220;shimeru.&#8221;\u00a0 That is to say, it is equal to &#8220;saseru&#8221; in meaning.\u00a0 So, consider the following sentence quoted in Tsuboi Hideto&#8217;s <em>Koe no shukusai<\/em> (1997), p. 151:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u4f5c\u8005\u3068\u8aad\u8005\u3068\u3092\u9ad8\u5ea6\u306b\u7d50\u5408\u305b\u3057\u3081\u308b\u3088\u3046\u306a\u7d9c\u5408\u5f62\u5f0f.\u00a0 An integrated form that closely connects writers and readers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Particularly when reading pre-World War II texts (though sometimes in more recent texts) one comes across the verb \u305b\u3057\u3081\u308b.
