There are two functions of \u307b\u3069 that may throw you off when you first encounter them.\u00a0 The first is a sentence such as this:<\/p>\n
\u4fee\u7406\u306b\u306f\u4e00\u9031\u9593\u307b\u3069\u304b\u304b\u308a\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Here it is synonymous with \u304f\u3089\u3044 or \u3050\u3089\u3044: The repairs will take about a week.\u00a0 You will know that it is functioning in this way when it follows a quantity.\u00a0 Note that it is not used with times or dates that do not involve duration.<\/p>\n
The other unusual use of \u307b\u3069 is actually just a stealth version of the basic “extent” sense.\u00a0 Consider this example:<\/p>\n
\u60aa\u3044\u5974\u307b\u3069\u3088\u304f\u7720\u308b\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
This sentence, which is the title of a film by Kurosawa Akira, means “The more evil someone is, the better they sleep.”<\/p>\n
One more example:<\/p>\n
\u305d\u3046\u3044\u3046\u8a00\u8449\u307b\u3069\u3001\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb\u306f\u3063\u304d\u308a\u304f\u3063\u304d\u308a\u805e\u3053\u3048\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n
\u677e\u7530\u9752\u5b50\u3001\u300c\u304a\u306b\u3044\u3055\u3093\u304c\u3053\u308f\u3044\u300d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
This sentence means, “The more the words were of that sort, the more clearly and distinctly he could hear them.”<\/p>\n
