Class Readings and Plans for Tuesday, December 1
Trees

Class Plan Today we will examine two aspects of forestry to demonstrate two dangers in environmental resource management, and hopefully be able to see how they might be avoided. To provide background, everyone should read two general articles: After reading these articles, but before 9:00 p.m. on Monday, November 30, please post an example from your own experience where you have seen one of these two dangers in action.

Next, we will consider two cases:
  • China Reforestation case: Steve will give a short presentation updating the material in the article below, which everyone should look over:
Urgenson, Lauren S., Amanda H. Schmidt, Julie Combs, Stevan Harrell, Thomas Hinckley, Qingxia Yang, Ziyu Ma, Li Yongxian, Lu Hongliang, and Andrew McIver (2014). Traditional Livelihoods, Conservation, and Meadow Ecology in Jiuzhaigou National Park, Sichuan, China, Human Ecology 42 (3): 481-91.

  • Eastside Dry Forest Case: For this case, no presentation, but be sure to read:
Franklin, Jerry F., R. Keala Hagmann, and Lauren S. Urgenson (2014). Interactions between societal goals and restoration of dry forest landscapes in western North America. Landscape Ecology 29: 1645-55.

  • We will then divide into two groups, and each group will consider one of the two case studies in light of the general principles from the Cumming and Ostrom articles.
