Choose someone you know. This can be you (see Socrates) or someone
else you know. Discuss the way this person's life has been shaped
by at least four of the constructed identity categories of gender, class,
nation, race, and religion. Think both about the way this person
conceives of her- or himself and about the way the person's opportunities
in life have been influenced by his or her position in these categories. You might also want to consider how these categories interact with one another in shaping this person's life.
Make sure, when you are considering how these different categories have shaped your subject's life, that you consider both the social positions of people in these categories and the cultural characteristics of the people in these categories.
Write 4-5 double-spaced pages.
Your paper is due before
5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9 in your section leader's mailbox in the lobby
of the anthropology department on the mezzanine floor of Denny Hall.
This assignment is worth a maximum of 20 points.
Penalties for late papers are slightly different from those for the other weekly assignments. 2 points will be taken off if the paper is handed in on the 10th; 4 if it is handed in on the 11th. No papers will be accepted after 5:00 p.m. on the 11th without a medical or other emergency excuse in writing signed by a doctor or other professional not related to you.
