The course bibliography provides many suggestions for additional reading and web-viewing and is meant to augment the information gained in the classroom. It is not a comprehensive listing of materials concerning Vashon and Maury, but rather focuses on the classroom sessions which comprise Vashon 101. It gives a fair representation of the amount and richness of materials produced about the island, everything from popular tales to scholarly scientific studies. The Vashon 101 Bibliography is a work in progress and will continue to grow and be revised as the course progresses.
Many of the publications listed are available at the Vashon Public Library and/or the University of Washington Libraries in Seattle. Keep in mind that the majority of specialized local history resources held at Vashon Public are not in the online catalog, so talk to your librarian for additional expert assistance. Additional materials pertinent to island history can be found at the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association Museum.
Finally, this bibliography owes much to Vashon Public Librarian Rayna Holtz who has amassed an extensive collection of unique materials on the islands, and to Dr. Bruce Haulman, Professor of History at Green River Community College and longtime researcher of Vashon's past. Please see his exhaustive bibliographic work at Vashon Bibliography
The compilation and presentation of the Vashon 101 Bibliography is my
responsibility and I am accountable for any and all mistakes, omissions
and typographical errors. If you need assistance or have questions
concerning this bibliography, please contact me via email:

The Vashon 101 Bibliography is organized in the order in which subjects are presented in the Spring 2007 Vashon 101 course syllabus. The sessions and resources are listed below, with the exception of the first section---the actual circumnavigation of Vashon is not offered this year.
This session is an afternoon cruise around Vashon-Maury Island
and will
include historical and current highlights of the island as
seen from the water.
