Surtsey emerged from a fissure in the mid-Atlantic ridge in 1963.  Since then, Icelandic ecologists have studied how plants and birds reclaim the land.  This fascinating laboratory of succession has yielded many valuable insights into dispersal and the pre-requisites for plant establishment. In 2008, Surtsey was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
