INTRODUCTION

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are a subject of much controversy in the United States. Due to the ongoing attention surrounding the potential risks associated with the growth, production, and consumption of GMOs, a legislative bill has been proposed:

“The No GMO Bill will prohibit the use of all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in products meant for human consumption.”

If this bill passes, it will drastically alter the lives of many players involved in the growth, development, regulation, purchase, and consumption of food crops in the United States.

Should the No GMO Bill pass? You will be researching the differing viewpoints of various players within the GMO controversy, and presenting the positions of these players to the whole community.

Should THE USE OF Genetically Modified organisms IN OUR FOOD BE PROHIBITED?

The progress that has occurred in genetics over the past half century has been remarkable—from the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure in 1953 to the recent deciphering of all three billion letters of the human genome. New knowledge about genes is already transforming medicine and agriculture and has the potential to change other fields, including energy and environmental sciences and information technology.

I also recognize that the power of modern genetics has raised important ethical, legal, and social issues that require careful study.
