conclusion

Your team was asked to investigate the science and controversy behind genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from the perspective of your assigned player (environmentalists, FDA, farmers, Monsanto, Frito-Lay, or US consumers).  You have just listened to the findings and positions of all players and should now have a deeper appreciation of the complex nature of the GMO controversy.  It is important to remember that there are often valid yet contradictory opinions on some of the critical issues facing our society. Few controversies are black and white and sometimes very real and difficult decisions must made that affect all of our lives.

In the end, when voting for an issue as important as this, all of the evidence must be weighed before a position is taken. So, where do you stand? How would you vote? Would you support the No GMO Bill or not? (Write your vote on a ballot and submit it to the “auditor” for results.)

In your science journal, reflect upon what you have learned about the science of genetically modified organisms and the very real controversy that is present in our society surrounding their use. In your reflection, please consider:

• What did you learn that surprised you most?

• What are you still unclear on and would like to know more about?

  1. Did anything you learn change the way you want to live, or make you think twice about the products you consume?

• What foods do you eat that contain GM components?

• Have you heard anything on the news or in daily conversation regarding GMOs?

THANKS!
