Some common errors in French:

1.

Regarder

Ecouter + objet direct

Chercher

Unlike English (to look AT, to listen TO, to look FOR), these verbs don’t take a preposition.

Il cherche son chat

Nous avons écouté le prof.

2.

To telephone:

Téléphoner à (objet indirect)

Appeler (objet direct)

Si on téléphonait à Ahmed? Si on lui téléphonait?

Si on appelait Ahmed? Si on l’appelait?

3.

To miss:

Manquer à

The thing you miss is the SUBJECT of the verb!

Mes gosses me manquent = I miss my kids.

La France lui manquait = he was missing France.

Tu m’as manqué! = I missed you!

4.

Forming the negation.

Ne..pas goes around the verb (and pronoun if there is one) in present and imperfect:

Je NE (les) fume PAS

Ils NE (les) fumaient PAS

(les = les cigarettes)

Ne … pas goes around the auxiliary (and pronoun) in the passé composé and the plus-que-parfait:

Nous NE (les) avons PAS fumées.

Tu NE (les) avais PAS fumées.

For pronominal verbs, same principle:

Ne..pas around the verb and pronoun in present and imperfect:

Il NE se lave PAS

Vous NE vous laviez PAS

Ne … pas around the auxiliary and pronoun in the passé composé and the plus-que-parfait:

Elles NE se sont PAS lavées.

Ils NE s’ étaient PAS lavés.

same for ne …. jamais

ne …. Rien

il n’a rien vu.

tu n’as jamais aimé les chiens.

Tu ne les as jamais aimés.
