Note: The agenda is loose, discussion is encouraged and presentation times will change if needed. We will have a display system for laptop-based presentations and an overhead projector in the room.

11:15 - 12:00 | Enhanced atmospheric observations;
(How) do we move forward from Kiladis reports? (Kiladis)
Do we need to develop a better strategy for entraining the atmospheric research community? (group discussion) |
12:00 - 13:00 | Lunch |
Afternoon - Pacific process studies
20 min presentations + 40 mins for discussion
Goal is to discuss the
evidence that this is currently an important problem for coupled models.
Path to significant coupled model improvement on seasonal to decadal timescales
Scientific integrity/importance, strategy/resources/calendar,
feasibility/readiness for each study.
An initial presenter and discussion leader has been
designated for each topic.
13:00 - 14:00 | EPIC and VEPIC; collaboration with VAMOS (Bretherton) |
14:00 - 15:00 | Equatorial upwelling/emergence (Kessler) |
15:00 - 15:15 | Break |
15:15 - 16:15 | Subduction/diapycnal mixing in subtropical overturning cells (Rudnick) |
16:15 - 17:15 | Western boundary currents Science issues (is there a particular focus among the complex system in the western tropical Pacific?). Technical issues (readiness of gliders, alternatives) (Robbins) |
18:30 - 21:00 | Salmon BBQ dinner at Chris Bretherton's house
6849 51 Ave NE, 206-527-4327. Directions to be handed out at the meeting. |
(Breaks will be at 10:30 and 15:00 as Monday)
8:30 - 12:00 |
Open discussion:
Other process study ideas we might be ready to pursue in next five years (open discussion). Prioritization of proposed process studies. Issues: Is there demonstrated relevance to low-freq variability and coupled modeling? to likely CPTs? Is now the time? Who is interested in leading the study? What more groundwork needs to be done to 'sell' ideas to SSC/agencies? What CLIVAR resources would be required? |
12:00 - 13:00 | Lunch |
13:00 - 17:00 | Attempt to draft our recommendations/writing assignments (bring a laptop if possible). |
