The Lineage Project (25 points)

My hope is that you will find something in the dance world, from the last eight years or so, that you feel is relevant or that you feel connected to, whether it is in pop culture, concert dance, dance for the camera, or any other form you can find! You will be asked to do some research about the form(s) or artist(s) involved, and to compare your gem to something or things from an earlier era.

Pieces of the Lineage Project:

1.  1 Question                                               Due:   November 3 11AM (5 pts)

                                                                        via Collect It

You should pick something you are sincerely interested in. Feel free to run any topic by me. Nothing is off limits! I can help you formulate or clarify ideas. Before you do come to me howeverÉSee the web site below for very helpful information on building a research question. While it is not related to dance, the process may help you develop your question.

2. 1 Annotated Bibliography                    Due:   November 7

                                                                        via Collect It

WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

Also, a reminder: as you research make sure you jot down all sources now so you don't have to dig them up at the last minute for your bibliography. As you can tell, this isn't something you throw together in a night. You need to annotate AT LEAST THREE SOURCES. You do not need to annotate more but you must list bibliographic information of ALL sources you are using thus far and they may not all be web sites...

Remember the Reference Tools page on the Library site. There are many helpful links there including the ÒWriterÕs WebÓ and ÒResearch and Documentation onlineÓ as well as the online version of parts of The Chicago Manual of Style.

Also, the following web site is marvelous: http://www.aresearchguide.com/1steps.html#step1

The book The Oxford Guide to Library Research, by Thomas Mann, is infinitely helpful and has just been updated. You can find it at Suzzalo. Call # Z710.M23 2005.

Be sure you use the Chicago Manual of Style as your guide for format, bibliography and citations.  All information must be cited that is not common knowledge or your own ideas in the bibliography, which becomes Works Cited on the final draft.

A minimum of 5 sources are required and must be cited:

At least 1 from the International Encyclopedia of Dance or Oxford Dictionary of Dance

      At least 1 periodical/journal article

At least 1 book (hard text)

At least 2 of your own choosing

Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for this assignment.

How do you evaluate or rate a web site? Remember the currency, quality and the authority of any information resource is crucial.

Who wrote or compiled the information?

What is their authority to write or speak on this topic?

Who is providing the information or sponsoring the web site?

Do they have a vested interest in a particular point of view?

How up-to-date is the information in the resource?

                  How accurate is the information?

How easy is it to search the web site?

Use parenthetical citation (internal citation), using the CMS guidelines.  Direct quotations, paraphrased quotations, and borrowed theories or opinions must be cited.  Do not provide citations for common knowledge.[1]

Do not worry about the peer review process. I will walk you through it. However, if you do not attend classes on those days it will severely impact your partner. So, please be respectful and come, unless you are really sick.
