Stella runtime versions for home use.

We are running Stella 5.1.1 on the lab machines.  The current version being sold by HPS Inc is Stella 6.  Models generated in Stella 5 can be opened and manipulated by Stella 6.  I  am not sure of the issues involved in developing models under Stella 6 and then moving them to Stella 5.

You are likely to want a copy to run on your own home machines as well.  There are several options for accomplishing this:

  1. Purchase a "student discount" copy from the HPS web site.  The research version runs about $105 with some sort of student status verification.  Go to the HPS web site URL: http://www.hps-inc.com/
Click on "order on line", check that you are student and follow the directions.   This will purchase for you a fully functional copy of Stella 6 for either your Windows or Mac machine.
  2. HPS also makes "runtime only" versions of Stella available free as demos.   These versions are fully functional, except that they cannot save models to disk.  You can open models, develop them, run them, print results, etc, but cannot save them.  This is actually fairly useful to have at home.  You can bring home models that you develop at at UWB and further manipulate them at home.  You can print out the model diagram and use it to put the mods into the model at UWB when you want to save it.  This mode of operation becomes less convenient toward the end of the term, when you might be working on more complex models.  Because it is free, this is the mode used by most students in the past.  There are two options here:

    a)   Obtain the free demo of Stella 6 from the HPS demo web site:  http://www.hps-inc.com/edu/stella/demo_gate.htm

Down load this to your machine from the web site.  Click on the executable that is downloaded, and it will install itself on your computer.

    b)  If you have a Windows machine, there is also a free copy of the Stella 5 runtime demo available.  It will be exactly like the lab versions, without any new features.  I have arranged with HPS to put it on their ftp web site.  If you are using IE as your web browser go to the following URL:
    ftp://ftpuser12:washington@ftp.hps-inc.com/users/ftpuser12/

Note that is not http but rather ftp.  This will display a directory with STELLAWin.exe in it.  Click on the file name and it will begin downloading.Click on the executable that is downloaded, and it will install itself on your computer.

If you are using Netscape, it may be necessary to go to the following URL:

    ftp://ftpuser12:washington@ftp.hps-inc.com/

Then click on users and then on ftpuser12 and finally on STELLAWin.exe.   It will then download. Click on the executable that is downloaded, and it will install itself on your computer.

If these fail, please see me.

I am starting the process of getting the lab machines upgraded to version 6.  But, that may not occur quickly (or at all).  I will let you know if we are going to have version 6 available during the term.

There also some model libraries for various subjects available for free from the demo site at HPS.  You may want to obtain some of those by just downloading them.
