Heidi Pauwels

Course description

The primary goal of this class is to provide an introduction to the language and literature of Old Avadhi, the literary form of Medieval Hindi associated with the Avadh (Oudh) area in Eastern UP. This will be accomplished by a grammar introduction and close reading of selections from one representative literary work in the original language, namely the Ramcaritmanas of Tulsidas. The class will focus on one theme, namely, the representation of Sita, Rama's wife. Ramcaritmanas will be placed in its literary, cultural, and historical context, but at the same time the modern popular perception is taken into account, with reference to the televised Ramayana and modern political speeches on the topic.
