Two Dimensional Fluid Orbital Mixing

Shawn Lillie

This is a 2-dimensional model of orbital mixing in a 96-well microplate. With the collaboration of Rosetta, Dr. Bruce Finlayson and myself, we were able to model velocity fields and concentration profiles for orbital mixing using COMSOL Multiphysics software. This model used the incompressible fluid equation of Navier-Stokes (chns), convection diffusion (chcd) and ALE (ale) for a moving mesh. We were able to test different mixing techniques which could be done using orbital mixing. It is very difficult to model a moving 2 dimensional surface. A future ambition is to model this problem in 3-dimensions. Our tests show that diffusion has little effect on orbital mixing, while the velocity contribute most to mixing in a well.
