Resident Duties and General Responsibilities

1. Service starts at 7:30 a.m. with CXR rounds with the medical ICU team. The work day finishes at 5:00 p.m. The reading room should be covered by at least one resident during this time (except during noon conference and Thursday lectures).

2. All current ICU radiographs should be previewed before non-ICU radiographs (e.g. clinic films, non-current exams).

3. If a significant abnormality is seen during your film preview (e.g. new or larger pneumothoraces, malpositioned tubes, etc.), the appropriate nurse or house staff should be notified immediately. Notification should then be documented in the subsequent dictation. Ask for help if you are unsure.

4. Chest radiographs should be marked in pencil with the following: significant patient history and pertinent findings.

5. Sign you reports at least twice daily.

6. There are 2 readouts/day: 9 am -12 p.m., and at 4:00 p.m.

7. Patient films should be removed from the alternators if they have not had new films in two days. Mark the patient listing with a down arrow; the fileroom staff will take the films down. Purge the board everyday.

8. Daily chest conferences are: *ICU Medical team 7:30 am *Post-call medical teams review the Medicine board from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.‹ *Tuesday 11:00 am Interesting Case Conference for the Medical Service (Food usually provided)

9. Weekly chest conference-attendance expected: Thursday, 12:15 p.m. Seattle Area Chest Grand Rounds in Harborview Hall. Lunch is served.

10. When asked, the resident will prepare new teaching files in a timely manner. When needed, ask for instructions on preparation.

11. Chest CT scans will be usually be reviewed between 11 am and 12 pm in the CT reading room.

12. Responsible for all boards when by oneself. When 2 residents are on the service, the Medicine board and the Neuro ICU board.

Teaching file sessions Individualized 1 hour teaching file sessions are provided 2-4 times/week depending upon scheduling and work load.

Resident directed Medical Student Teaching Usually one Tuesday/month, usually, 1:00 pm‹2:00 pm. Cases to be used are in the reading room film- file cabinet.
