Erin Ingvalson, PhD

Principal Investigator

Erin Ingvalson is a Research Associate Professor at the University of Washington and director of the Listen & Learn Lab. Her background is in cognitive psychology (PhD, Carnegie Mellon University) followed by postdoctoral training in speech and hearing (Northwestern University). Her current research program builds on this background to understand the factors that support speech perception in challenging listening situations. One aspect of this research is to understand how children make use of the input from a hearing aid or cochlear implant to successfully learn language or learn to read. The goal of her research program is to optimize listeners’ ability to understand speech when listening is hard, including optimizing language and literacy outcomes for children with hearing loss. Her work is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Institute for Education Sciences.

Christopher Anagi

PhD Student

Christopher is a first year PhD student at the University of Washington. He received his bachelor’s degree in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences with a major in Audiology from the University of Health and Allied Sciences in 2021. Prior to joining the Listen and Learn Lab, he worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant at the same school where he assisted faculty members in conducting research in improving speech perception among children with hearing loss. He also practiced as a clinical audiologist in private practice in Ghana, assessing and diagnosing hearing loss and providing appropriate interventions. Currently, he is working on a project on how different combinations of auditory skill training impact literacy outcomes in children. Christopher spends his free time watching movies and playing video games.

Tak-Wang Li

PhD Student

I am a first-year PhD student interested in phonological acquisition, sociophonetics, and the interface between phonological processing and reading development. I am also captivated by how language evolution is driven by linguistic and cognitive forces.

Erin Smith

Core SLP Student

Erin is in her second year of the University of Washington’s Master of Science in Clinical Research Speech-Language Pathology (CoreSLP). She earned her bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 and has previously worked as a research assistant at Carnegie Mellon University, conducting research on speech perception and auditory cognition across the lifespan.
