Ling/CSE 472: Reflection, part 2

Revisiting Goals

In R1, you had the ability to "shoot for the moon" and be curious about your interests in linguistics/computation. Now that you have nearly a quarter's experience in computational linguistics, we ask you to revisit your goals. We also encourage you to ask questions in this reflection and to seek guidance on how to best meet your goals. We anticipate that you will be able to accomplish this in 3-5 pages (~750-1250 words).

Self-assessment

Please answer the following questions:

  1. Which components of the class have been more helpful for you in terms of meeting your R1 goals?
  2. What skills did you gain during this time that put you close to accomplishing the goal or task outlined in R1?
  3. What resources have you learned about that are relevant to completing your R1 goals?

Adjusting goals

Please address the following as an update to your R1 goals:

  1. Skills: What skills and knowledge are you still missing to be able to accomplish your R1 goals?
  2. Scope: How was the scope of the task or goals you identified? Has your opinion changed on how long such a goal would take to accomplish? What evidence are you using? If you can, identify how you would modify the scope of your goals.
  3. Feasibility: Are there aspects of your R1 goals that no longer seem possible with current linguistic understanding and available technnology? If you can, suggest alternatives to the part(s) of your goals that you now think are infeasible.
  4. Resources: Do you think you have enough resources to accomplish your goals? What resources do you have, and what are you missing?
  5. Ethics: Do you have any new opinions about the social and ethical implications of your R1 goals? Who (besides you) would benefit or potentially be adversely impacted if your goals came to fruition?
  6. Interest: Are you still as interested in your R1 goals as you were originally? Does something else seem more interesting to you now?
