Linguistics 575: Ethics in NLP

Ethics Statements

For this exercise, we will explore what it takes to write an "ethical considerations" section in an ACL-type paper.

1. Select a paper to write one for. This could be a paper of your own (past, present or in progress) or a paper that someone else wrote. If it's from the bibliography for this class, one of the papers from the NLP for Social Good section is probably the best bet. But it could be any NLP paper---it does not have to be something with a specific ethics or social good focus.
2. Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of the paper.
3. Draft the "ethical considerations" section that you believe would fit with this paper, following the proposal of Schmaltz 2018 or modified as you see fit.
4. Bring your draft to class on 11/6. In class, we will workshop these statements.
5. Based on the discussion on 11/6, revise your draft and submit the ethics statement assignment by 11/8.
