Specialized Group Resources:
A variety of equipment available for investigations of photochemical and various environmental redox processes includes a “merry-go-round” (i.e., turntable) photochemical reactor that can be configured with either a 15-W low-pressure Hg-vapor lamp or a 450-W medium-pressure Hg-vapor lamp for simultaneous irradiation of samples contained within 14 quartz or borosilicate glass test tubes; a collimated (2” beam diameter) 450-W Newport-Oriel research arc lamp source that can be fitted with either a Hg lamp or an ozone-free Xe lamp for high-precision UV dosage experiments; a 1700 W Atlas XLS(II)+ solar simulation system equipped with a Xe arc lamp and a 1100 cm2 sample table for extended irradiation of large sample volumes; a high-output (>14% O3, w/w) corona-discharge ozone generator for preparation of high-concentration O3 stocks or semi-batch ozonation studies; and a photochemical O3 generator with controlled atmosphere testing chamber and low-concentration O3 monitor for investigations of ozone chemistry under ambient conditions (see below for photos). A general list of equipment and analytical instrumentation available within our department can be found here.
A ~600 sq. ft. Biosafety Level 2 laboratory space is available for experiments involving human pathogens. This laboratory space is equipped with basic microbiological equipment, including: a shaking incubator; a stationary dual chamber CO2 incubator; a Class II, Type A2 biological safety cabinet; refrigerated, high-speed centrifuge; and several of the photochemical reactors described above (see below for photos). This space and adjacent laboratory space in More Hall are equipped to run a variety of culture- and nucleic acid-based methods for enumeration of pathogenic microorganisms.
