We formed the Riot Alliance around a series of workshops integrating basic circuit design within dissident messaging; entangling electronics with the tools of protest (paint, pins and cardboard) and with the intimate and handmade. These hints of craft-based expression recall efforts throughout the late 20th century by groups like the See Red Women’s Workshop and the Riot Grrrl movement who created posters that questioned everyday sexism using bold color and simple lines, a visual language that challenged masculine forms of urban design and street art. In a first meeting, we used conductive inks to screen print a series of illustrative, handmade electronic protest signs that lit up, in an act of solidarity, during the Women’s March on Washington on January 21st.
After our campus was targeted by neo-Nazi vandalism and alt right violence, we turned to poster making again, this time calling for response from our university administration by bringing our posters to its classrooms and hallways. In the most recent of the series, we came together with community members to punch out button pins and discuss possibilities of visual resistance. Rather than being made visible by electronic forms of registry, we use these connections (both literal and figurative) to create visibility on our own terms.
