Tom's Picture Tom Daniel

Tom  is the Joan and Richard Komen Endowed Chair of Biology. He received his BS and MS at the University of Wisconsin, a PhD at Duke and was the Bantrell Postdoctoral Fellow in Engineering Sciences at Caltech until 1984 when he joined the University of Washington and has been here ever since.   He is the proud recipient of the University of Washington 1989 Distinguished Teaching Award and the 2001 Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award as well as a MacArthur fellowship.

John Edwards

Following a distinguished career studying insect neurobiology, development, and ecology (punctuated with numerous awards such as a Guggenheim award, a von Humbolt award and the Javitz Award) John is now Emeritus Professor of Biology.  He is also elected to the Alaska Sportsman Hall of Fame.
Autobiography
Zane Aldworth
Zane  completed his Ph.D. at Montanna State University in the Miller lab where he worked on the sensory dynamics of cercal sound detection in crickets. He is currently studying control and dynamics of hawkmoth flight with a focus on wing strain sensing.
Simon Sponberg
Simon  completed his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley in the  Full lab where he worked on the motor control of insect locomotion and on antennal sensing.  He is currently studying control and dynamics of hawkmoth flight with a focus on wing steering muscles.
Jessica Fox
is currently a postdoc in the lab working on the control and dynamics of insect flight. Jessica came to the UW from Cornell University where she worked on the neurobiology of mechanosensory structures in the legs of beetles.  Her dissertaion was on the neurobiology and biomechanics of crane fly halteres, whopping big inertial measurement organs. Jess soon departs to a postdoc in the lab of Mark Frye at UCLA

Armin Hinterwirth
is postdoc in the lab. He came to the UW from Rockefeller University where he worked in the Hudspeth Lab.  Having completed his thesis on both mechanosensory and visual sensory information processing in Manduca sexta with an eye towards multimodal integration, he now turns his attention to studies of pitch and yaw dynamics of Manduca.  He has built a flight simulator that only a moth could love.

Jonathan Dyhr
is a postdoc in the lab focussing on combining control theory and sensory biology in moth flight. He came to the UW with a doctoral degree in insect neurobiology from the University of Arizona where he worked with Chuck Higgins on visual control of flight paths in bees. .  He will be working with Kriti Morgansen and members of our lab on a new MURI grant awarded to the team.

David Williams
is graduate student in the Physiology and Biophysics Program. He came to the UW with a Bachelor's degree in physics from Reed College.  He is focussing on molecular motors and works with Mike Regnier and our lab on the development of 3-D models of myosin-actin interaction.

Nicole George
is graduate student in the Department of Biology.  She came to the UW with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from UC Berkeley where she worked with Mimi Koehl in fluid mechanics.  She is focussing on the biomechanics of Manduca flight muscle -- and it's temperature dependence.Nicole's home page
Robin Harris
is graduate student in the Neurobiology and Behavior Program. Robin came to the UW from Cornell University. With Jim Truman as her primary advisor, Robin is examing the behavioral and circuit correlates of motor neuron deficits in Drosophila.  She was embedded in the lab for the year to learn some kinematics and biomechanics and now resides at Janelia Farm.

Sharri Zamore
is graduate student in the Neurobiology and Behavior Program. Sharri came to the UW from Cornell University. With Adrienne Fairhall as her primary co-advisor she is working in the lab on sensory processing during flight in complex turbulent structures.
Brad Dickerson
is graduate student in the Biology Department. Brad came to the UW from Swarthmore where he worked with Rachel Merz and the University North Carolina Chappel Hill where he worked with Ty Hedrick on moth antennal sensing. He is currently doing a rotation in the lab, focussing on inertial sensory systems in moths.
Sweta Agrawal
is graduate student in the Neurobiology and Behavior Program working with Michael Dickion. She came to the UW via Caltech and the Columbia University where she worked at the AMNH on haltere diversity. She is currently doing a rotation in the lab learning how to apply finite element methods to explore some of the mechanical consequences of campaniform sensilla shape.
Billie Medina
is a recent gradute of the Department of Biology.  She is currently serving as the Daniel Lab Technical Coordinator, overseeing the daily operations of the lab and running antennal stimulation and videographic systems for the DARPA grant.

Jacob Lockey
is an undergraduate in the department of Biology.  Jacob is working with Simon on direct electrical stimulation of turning movements elicited by spike addition in the flight power muscles in Manduca.  He has also been instrumental in wind-tunnel design and construction.

Mikael (Coco) Daranciang
is an undergraduate student in Biology working with Armin on implantable microelectronics and the development of direct antennal stimulation in moths, exploring the steering circuit associated with antennal mechanoreception.
Amber Fetchko
is an undergraduate student with a double major in Neurobiology and in the Applied Computational and Math Sciences program.  She is insterested in computer neural interfaces and in programming, math and widgets.

Katie Miller
is  an undergraudate Biology student working with Jessica on the mechanics and neurobiology of halteres.   She is focussing on the biomechanics of halteres.  Katie also leads the UW chapter of Tri-Beta, the undergraduate biology honors society.

Darren Howell
is an undergraduate at the UW.  He is currently working with Armin and Billie on direct electrical stimulation of tiny antennal muscles to explore the consequences of antennal input in flight control..
