INVENTORY OF PLANTS (broken into 4 web pages)
known to occur on the 484 acre University of Washington property on San Juan Island,
commonly known as the Friday Harbor Laboratories Preserve

compiled by Claudia E. Mills with the assistance of Eugene N. Kozloff *
2001 - 2005

* incorporating earlier studies by Sarah Gage (1997) and Charles Eaton (1976)

This inventory includes both native and non-native plants located on the Friday Harbor Laboratories Preserve, comprising 484 acres on the east side of San Juan Island, San Juan County, Washington. The nonindigenous plants include a few trees planted when the property had an "arboretum" aspect earlier in this century as well as remnants of a small orchard, and plants used more recently for landscaping in the developed "campus" portion of the property, in addition to various non-natives that have managed to become established in the wild portions of the property. Non-native species (for the purposes of this list, non-native means species not indigenous to San Juan Island) are indicated by an asterisk (*) preceding the scientific name of the plant. An "x" in the spreadsheet columns indicates presence of that plant within a given habitat.

The taxonomy used for this plant list combines expertise from a variety of sources. Families used for the vascular plants derive mostly from Atkinson and Sharpe (1985). Popular books that would be useful for these vascular plant identifications include Kozloff (1976), Atkinson and Sharpe (1985), and Pojar and MacKinnon (1994). Eugene Kozloff developed a new set of keys by family for plants found west of the Cascades in Oregon, Washington and southern British Columbia which have also been used for some of these plant identifications (book published 2005 by Timber Press of Portland, Oregon).

The plant species list was compiled mostly in the autumn of 2001. Previous studies by Charles Eaton (1976) and Sarah Gage (1997) provided substantial and important initial lists from which to build the present inventory. The habitat breakdown posted here is an abbreviation of a more detailed list of specific habitats surveyed by Claudia Mills, that is not posted on the web. Neither matrix has been completely filled in, but work will continue in 2005 by a variety of local naturalists. Persons contributing to date include Claudia E. Mills, Eugene N. Kozloff, Victoria Wyllie-Echeverria, Susan Brady, Bruno Pernet, and Susan Vernon.
