WWLLN is the oldest global lightning location network that operates in realtime. It operates by detecting VLF (Very Low Frequency) radio waves generated by lightning. In this process we are collaborating WWLLN hosts from 30 universities and government labs all around the world. This network has a long list of scientific publications (see wwlln.net/publications ) and a recent PhD here ata UW.
