Laura Larsson
is currently a Clinical Faculty member in the Department of Health Services
and a Principal in Cedar Collaboration. Between 2000 and 2002 she was a National Library of Medicine (NLM) Public Health Informatics Fellow at OHSU in Portland, OR, where she took classes and worked on many independent study projects. During June and July 2002 she did a research project in NLM's Cognitive Science Branch. The title of that project was "Knowledge Mining in Four Public Health Communities of Practice". From 1980-2000 she was the Director of Information Services. In that role she provided for the research and teaching information needs of a very eclectic user group. When she was with the School she was the motivating force behind development of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine's Home Page (SPHCM), the Health Services home page and various of its tracks and was responsible for creating more than 150 course Webs. Prior to coming to Health Services, she was the head of the Mathematics Research Library at the University of Washington. In keeping with her commitment to public health in the Pacific North West and nationally, she set up and manages seven discussion groups for public health practitioners: PHNUTR-L (Public Health Nutritionists List), PNWHEALTH (Pacific Northwest Health Educators and School Health Educators), PHNURSES (Public Health Nurses), PHSW (Public Health Social Work), BIRTH23MH (Mental Health in Children from Birth to Age Three), and HSR-L (Health Services Research List). The most recent list is called PH-INFO (Public Health Informatics). She does considerable teaching in the areas of public health
and in personal knowledge management. Another key teaching area is the use
of, and content building, in PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants or handheld
devices). She has owned a PDA since they were manufactured by US Robotics
(1997) and currently owns two Palm OS PDA - a HandEra 330 and a TRGPro as
well as an iPAQ 3850 (which she loves). She has developed two PDA workshops
and has given many talks on owning and using handheld devices. Her most
recent PDA handout is titled: 101 Public Health Uses of a PDA. This
handout was distributed at the recent Washington State Joint Conference
on Health during the roundtable that she gave at that conference. |
