Car Recycling: Waste Watch Wasteline

As the car population continues to rise it is important that the amount of each 'end-of-life vehicle' (ELV) that is recycled is maximised, so as to reduce its impact on waste generation. However, the greatest environmental impact of motor vehicles arises, not from ELV disposal, but from everyday use (such as fuel consumption and exhaust emmissions, and waste generation from 'in-service' replacement of faulty or worn out parts). The second largest impact arises from vehicle manufacture, and this is rising.

Car Recycling Systems

The CRS line facillitates the dismantling of car wrecks in an industrially and commercially viable manner; the CRS line operates at optimum output, if processing some 10.000 car wrecks every year. At this level, shredder waste becomes a thing of the past, and in adition, the materials removed find their way onto the residues market. Good news for both the operator and the environment.

European Scrap Car Recycling Fight Finally Settled

BRUSSELS, Belgium, July 22, 1999 (ENS) - The battle between European Union governments over who should pay for recycling scrap cars was settled this afternoon with a slight change to the draft end-of-life vehicles law to allow car manufacturers an extra three years before they have to take on full financial responsibility.

A 1999 report from the General Accounting Office, Congress' investigative arm, found that Superfund spent $14 billion but had not completed work at 42 percent of the worst sites. A recent study of 150 Superfund sites found the agency typically spent hundreds of millions of dollars per cancer case avoided.

KYOTO, Japan - The United States and other industrialized countries ended 11 days of contentious haggling at a global-warming conference today by agreeing on a historic pact to control the Earth's "greenhouse" gas emissions.
