Tests

There will be:
2 mid-term tests (50 min.)
1 quiz weekly (20-30 min.) in the tutorial session, except if there is a test.
1 final exam (110 min.), or alternatively, 2 final exams of 50 minutes each.

Any absence must be justified before the start of a test. If absence is unavoidable, please call 206-543-8883, and leave a message, or send email to zelias@u.washington.edu.

An unjustified absence results in a zero grade.

Grades

The grade for the course is the sum of two parts: Grade = A + X

A = weighted average of quizzes, tests, and final exam, normalized over 4.

The relative weights are:
1/3 for two tests
1/3 for the final exam
1/3 for the set of quizzes

X = conditional amount based primarily on homework, provided A > 2.0 and the homework average is not less than 50%.  As an indication, a grade of 4.0 is obtained with A = 3.7, and a homework average of 90% or higher.

The assignment is due at the start of class on the Monday of the following week.

Requirements:

  • Include the problem statement.

  • Include figures, and short explanations of what is being done.

  • Use 8.5 x 11 paper, preferably engineering paper.

Homework is graded by teaching assistants, and is returned in the tutorial sessions.

Special circumstances about late homework should be discussed with a teaching assistant.

Tutorial Sessions

The tutorial sessions are meant to complement the lectures in providing a different learning environment and to help with homework problems. Quizzes and tests are also given during the tutorial sessions.  Tutorial notes are posted weekly. Students should print out these notes, and examine the questions they contain prior to the tutorial session. The main activities in a tutorial session are to:

  • Work on and answer questions in the tutorial notes in a group setting.

  • Obtain help with current homework problems and class material.

  • Take a weekly quiz covering the material of the preceding week, unless a test is given.
