Search databases that index journal articles

Conducting a search in one or more of these databases which combines search terms for your topic, discipline, or pedagogical approach will retrieve article citations, abstracts, and in some cases, links to electronic full-text of the article itself. Some databases to search are suggested here but you can also browse the Browse Subjects section of the Libraries Information Gateway for additional discipline-specific periodical databases.

A few sample searches are illustrated
ERIC
Sponsored by the US Dept of Education with coverage back to 1966, this database consists of two files: the Resources in Education (RIE) file of document citations and the Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) file of journal article citations from over 750 professional journals. Search terms from the ERIC Thesaurus to consider combining with terms describing your discipline: college instruction, college curriculum, instructional design, instructional effectiveness, teaching methods (more specific terms include case method, clinical teaching, learner controlled instruction, lecture method, discovery learning), distance education, cognitive objectives, affective objectives, behavioral objectives.
PsycINFO
Contains citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports in the field of psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, and law. Search terms from the PsycINFO Thesaurus to consider combining with terms describing your discipline include: college teachers, teaching, teaching methods, learning, experiential learning, lecture method, directed discussion method, computer assisted instruction.
Web of Science
Includes the three citation indexes, Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index with coverage back to 1975. In addition to searching for articles on a topic, if you have a specific article you can search to see what articles have cited it. With any search result you can utilize built-in links to explore the network of cited work related to a specific article. Times Cited will link to articles that have cited the article citation displayed; the Find Related Records button will bring up articles that share bibliographic references with the citation displayed.

Notification services

The University Libraries provides notification services that allow you to be automatically notified by email of new materials that match your profile.
Zephyr
Establish a Zephyr profile to be notified of new materials added to the University Libraries Catalog
Ingenta REVEAL
You can choose to have the table of contents for specific journals sent to you as new issues are added to the database, or you may establish a subject profile which will generate an email of article citations each month. Draws upon a database of over 11 million citations from more than 26,000 journals, with coverage back to 1988.
