Benjamin Wiley
was born in Rochester, NY. At 15, he moved with his family to
Minneapolis, MN. At 17. he began attending the University of
Minnesota, Twin Cities campus, and graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in
chemical engineering, a minor in chemistry, and a minor in Chinese.
Since 2003, Ben has been working toward his Ph.D. in chemical
Engineering at the University of Washington. As part of the Xia Group,
he is currently exploring the nucleation
and growth mechanisms by which each shape is obtained, and the applications for
which each shape is uniquely suitable. |

Joseph McLellan
attended
Western Washington University where he received his B.S. in 2001 and M.S. in 2003,
both in chemistry. His graduate work
at Western focused on the use of liquid crystals for the templated growth of
organic semiconductors. Since 2001 he
has been at the University of Washington working as a graduate student with
Prof. Younan Xia. His scientific
interests include novel surface patterning and fabrication techniques,
nanoparticle synthesis, self-assembly, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Jungho Son is from Korea. He majored in chemistry and received his B.S.
(1999), M.S. (2001) and Ph.D. (2005, inorganic chemistry) in Sungkyunkwan University. In his Ph.D degree, his research was mostly on the crystal structure from the self-assembly of inorganic clusters (polyoxometalates) using ionic interactions under the direction of prof. Young-Uk Kwon. After graduation, he had a research experience in dye-sensitized solar cell as a postdoc in Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea for one and a half year. He joined Younan Xia group in July 2006, and he is now involved in the synthesis and characterization of metal oxide nanowires.

Yujie Xiong was born in Jiangxi, China, in 1979. He entered Special Class for the Gifted
Youth (SCGY) at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1996
and received a BS in Chemical
Physics in 2000. He obtained his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 2004
from USTC (with Professor Yi Xie), and then joined Professor Younan Xia's
group at the University
of Washington (UW) in Seattle as a postdoctoral fellow. His current
research interests include solution-phase synthesis, self-assembly, nucleation
and growth, and surface plasmonic properties of nanostructured materials.

Jesse McCann
was born in White Plains, New York in 1981. He spent his childhood in
the metropolitan area, living on Long Island and in Westchester during
his formative years. He attended Dartmouth College from 1999-2003,
graduating with an A.B. with honors in Chemistry. He is now pursuing
his Ph.D. in chemistry under the tutelage of Professor Younan Xia at
the University of Washington in Seattle. He is actively engaged in
enhancing the electrospinning technique to create nanofibers with
novel compositions, morphologies and architectures for such
applications as tissue engineering and controlled release. |
