PHIL 450A:  Midterm Exam (1000 word upper limit).

DUE BY MIDNIGHT ON WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31.

We typically think that we can acquire justified beliefs by reasoning from justified beliefs.  However, this raises a question of how it is even possible for reasoning to produce justified beliefs.  In order for reasoning to produce justified beliefs, do we need a priori insight into necessary truths to validate the steps of the reasoning?  Before you begin your paper, decide what your answer is to that question.  (It must be either Yes or No.  No Undecideds on this assignment.)  Your paper should have two parts:  (1) Begin with the strongest case you can make for the answer that you disagree with.  (2) Then explain your position and reply to the argument in part (1).

Please do not discuss this assignment with anyone else.  It is to be your own work.
