PHIL 437A:  READING ASSIGNMENTS

 

Reading assignments are taken from the three course texts:  (1) T:  David Hume, A Treatise of Human Nature (Oxford Philosophical Texts), David F. Norton and Mary J. Norton, eds.;(2)Baier:  Annette Baier, A Progress of Sentiments; (3) CC:  David Norton, Cambridge Companion to Hume.  Except for the readings for Week #1 and Week #6, readings should be done before class on the Tuesday of the week they are assigned.

 

Week 1 (Sept. 28):  Introduction

Hume's two short autobiographies:  CC, pp. 345-356;

T:  Abstract, pp. 407-417, and Advertisement and Introduction, pp. 2-6.

 

Week 2 (Oct 3-5):  The Mind

Week 3 (Oct. 10-12):  Causation and Belief

Week 4-(Oct. 17-19):  Necessary Connection
