Reading Questions 2—Belkin’s Anomalous State of Knowledge (ASK)

When reading Belkin’s article you want to think about the following issues:

·        Make sure you can explain the ASK approach.

·        To which basic concepts introduced in class is it most relevant?

·        Which new basic concepts does it introduce?

·        How do these new concepts relate to the ones we have already discussed?

·        How would the ASK approach explain the difference between:

o       Information want

o       Information demand

o       Information need

·        How would the ASK define self need and proxy need?

·        How would the ASK approach explain:

o       Information searching

o       Information surfing

o       Information encountering

·        How would the ASK approach determine whether information was used?

·        How does the information system help the user, according to the ASK approach?

·        What are the implications of the ASK approach to system design?

We will discuss these issues in class
