Snowmass 2001: Proposed Education Program

NOTE:  Plans are preliminary and all events are still tentative as of 2/5/01. Check here again as July approaches.

Teacher Workshops:

• week of July 2:  the Quarknet   workshop for teachers,

                 usually held at Fermilab, will  take place at
                 Snowmass; participating teachers are from across
                 the country and engaged in summer research through
                 the Quarknet program  (Marge Bardeen)

• week of July 9: a workshop for local Colorado teachers;

                 the leading candidate is a program run by the
                 the Cosmic Ray community (training teachers to run
                 cosmic ray detection experiments with specially donated
                 equipment that stays at their schools) ;  see websites
                 of   CROP   and WALTA   (Greg Snow & Jeffrey Wilkes)

Student Workshops:

• weeks of July 2, July 9, July 16
• variety of half-day programs for students in middle and/or high school

Science Weekend (July 7/8)

• Large Scale Demos
• e.g. from    SciTech      (Ronen Mir; see photo page)
• Tabletop Demos
• hunks of HEP detectors with docents
• other science demos brought by any interested volunteers
• hopefully some by the teachers attending workshops!
• Physics on Stage
• e.g. by       UIUC Physics Van      (Mats Selen)
• e.g. by      Little Shop of Physics       (Brian Jones)
• On-Line Science Fair
• computer room open to public (one staff member per terminal)
• HEP-related interactive links bookmarked on Web browsers
• Lectures (day and evening)
