Prompt
for Flatland: I am interested in your response to the book from a mathematical,
not a social point of view.
1)
What things seemed obvious to you? What things did you have to grapple with?
What helped you in resolving the latter?
2)
Thinking about dimensions: You know what the Square saw when he observed
Lineland (2 dimensions), which the Linelanders didnŐt believe he could see, and
you know what he saw of Flatland when he became briefly 3-dimensional, which
the Flatlanders didnŐt believe he could see. If you were on a visit to a
4-dimensional world and looked from it into our 3-dimensional world, what do
you think you might see that you canŐt see from here at home?
3) This one is very specific: When the 3-dimensional sphere visited Flatland, how did the Square perceive him? Knowing that, if our class were visited by a 4-dimensional sphere, how might we perceive her?
