Open-Cell (Porous) Microcellular Foams

Many applications are envisioned in the biomedical field for porous microcellular foams made from biocompatible or biodegradable polymers. For example, it is hypothesized that a polymer implant with surface layers that are porous with pores in the 20 to 30 μm range might illicit a better healing response compared to an implant with a solid surface. Tissue engineering is another large area of application, where porous scaffolds are needed to support natural tissue regeneration and growth. Various research groups around the globe are involved in the investigation of microcellular open cell foams.
