Here are some directions for visiting the Department by bus. Also see
the web pages for Metro
(the local bus system) for schedules and maps.
From Downtown Seattle
Find the nearest entrance to the
bus tunnel.
Take a 71, 72, or 73 express bus from any tunnel station. (There will be
one of these every 10 minutes most times of day.) The fare is $1.00 ($1.25
peak hours); pay when you exit. The bus will go via
Interstate 5. After you go over the high bridge over the ship canal,
you're getting near UW. The bus will go down NE Campus Parkway, passing
11th Street, 12th Street, then Brooklyn Ave. Get off just after Brooklyn
Avenue. (If the bus turns up University Avenue, you went a little too far;
just get off at the next stop.) Pick up a campus map if you want at the
Visitor Information Center at the corner of University Way and NE Campus
Parkway (location I-10 on the
map).
Continue east on NE Campus Parkway, crossing to the left-hand side of the
street, and take the pedestrian bridge over 15th Avenue by the Henry Art
Gallery. Continue walking through the campus south to Physics/Astronomy Building. Map. Physics/Astronomy Building is at coordinates J/K-12/13. N-Body Shop is located north west corner
of Physics/Astronomy Building at 3rd floor.
From SeaTac Airport
The city bus works reasonably well from the airport. Exit the baggage
claim area and turn right. Keep going past all the Gray Line stops, taxi
stands, etc. At the far end is the Metro bus stop. Board a 194 express
bus going north to downtown Seattle. Pay a two-zone fare as you board
($1.25 or $1.75 peak hours), and ask for a transfer. Get off at any tunnel bus station.
Transfer to the 71, 72, or 73, and follow the directions above. If the
tunnel is closed, transfer on 3rd Avenue to a local 71, 72, or 73 bus and
proceed as above.
There are also various Gray Line,
Shuttle Express, and other busses
serving the airport. Gray Line will take you to various downtown hotels;
Shuttle Express will take you to the door at UW or anywhere else (probably
after meandering around dropping off other people).
From the East Side
See the
East
Side Bus Routes section of the
UW bus route page.
A couple of relevant routes are 242 and 263 from around Microsoft
and Overlake, and 271
from Bellevue Transit Center. For the 242 and 263 you have to get off at the
Montlake Station and walk to campus (10 minutes), or transfer to a local
bus going to campus. The 271 goes on 15th Ave, bordering the campus.
From Amtrak
Exit the station by the stairs going up. Turn right on Jackson
Street and walk one block to the International District bus tunnel
station. Proceed as above.
From Elsewhere
There are around fifty bus routes that go to the University -- check the
UW bus route page
to see whether there is a bus from your starting point. (If you find a bus
that goes onto the campus, get off at Physics/Astronomy Building bus stop)
