Transparency

I got the idea for a section on transparency from Michael Cross, a journalist I interviewed while on sabbatical. The idea is to make influences on what I do and write transparent to all, so that you can judge for yourself what biases may be present.

I do not accept honoraria from health IT firms.  I do accept honoraria and consulting fees from independent organizations and government.  I follow University of Washington ethics guidelines.

At UW, I work with software supplied by vendors, and attend conferences they sponsor.  Most of these conferences have been with Cerner Corp and Epic, vendors for our inpatient and outpatient EMRs.    I don’t receive payment from vendors.

The UW or I pay travel expenses to vendor-sponsored activities, but in the past I took trips at Cerner’s request for which they paid my airfare and hotel, but no honoraria.

I occasionally consult and accept speaking fees, but not from vendors or consultants.  I receive royalties from the book published by Elsevier. I was on the Board of TransformativeMed.com and was compensated with stock, but to avoid appearance of conflict of interest in 2014 I resigned and relinquished claim to any stock.
