For over twenty years, Dia Center for the Arts (formerly the Dia Art Foundation) has played a vital and original role among arts institutions in New York. As well as nationally and internationally, by initiating, supporting, presenting, and preserving projects in nearly every artistic medium, and creating a primary locus for interdisciplinary art and criticism. Dia's first major projects, undertaken in the late 1970s, were long-term sited works of art not likely to be accommodated by conventional museums because of their nature or scale. Many of these projects are ongoing, including; Walter De Maria's The Lightning Field (1977), The Broken Kilometer (1979), and The New York Earth Room (1977); the massive installation of works by Donald Judd and John Chamberlain at Marfa, Texas (now operated by the Chinati Foundation), the installation of Dan Flavin at Bridgehampton; and others. From 1974 to 1984, Dia collected in depth the works of a focused group of artists, including Joseph Beuys, John Chamberlain, Walter De Maria, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Imi Knoebel, Blinky Palermo , Fred Sandback, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol, all recognized as among the most important artists of the last three decades.

NLM's
History of Medicine Division has launched Historical Anatomies on the Web, a
new digital project that broadens access to the Library's rich collection of
illustrated anatomical books, which date from the 15th century. The new Web
site emphasizes images rather than text. So far, the site includes 120 images
from five anatomical books by Andreas Vesalius, Johannes de Ketham, Magnus Hundt,
Albrecht Drer, and Bernardino Genga. Images from nearly 20 other anatomical
works will be added in the future.
