Jan. 7    Development of the Social Self.  Diversity in physical development, gender and sexuality.  Debrief "Feel the Difference."  Read Cole & Cole (1993): Biological and social foundations of adolescence; Schwartz & Karge (1996): Human Diversity, Chs. 5 and 8.

Jan. 12   Identity development.  Read Harter (1990): Self and identity development; Cain & Hilty (1993): Matika:  "I picture myself as being this woman."

Jan. 14   Being "different": Ethnic identity, disability and identity.  Read: Nelson-Barber & Harrison (1996): Bridging the politics of identity in a multicultural classroom; Stainback, et al. (1994): A commentary on inclusion and the development of a positive self-identity by people with disabilities; Wilson (1993): Misconceptions of self and identity;  Callahan (1997): Advice about being an LD student.

Jan. 19   Friendship development.  Read: Savin-Williams & Berndt (1990): Friendship and peer relations (+ page on Selman's theory of friendship development).

Jan. 21  Peer groups and peer culture.  Read Finders (1997):  When you're in junior high, everything's different; Lee (1996): What's in a name? Asian identities at Academic High School.  Guest speakers:  Dr. Lee Nelson and Dave McFarlane discuss sexual harrassment and related strategies for teachers.

Jan. 26   Intro to Special Education: Laws, IEPs, categories.  Discuss upcoming field experience and Case Study #1 (Shadowing).

Jan. 28    Special education placement.  In Banks & Banks, Ch 13: Heward & Cavanaugh (1997): Educational equality for students with disabilities;  Danforth & Rhodes (1997): Deconstructing disability.

Mar. 9 Instructional adaptations for cognitive differences. Mar. 30   School context and classroom management: What are we teaching students through management strategies?  P. Noguera: Preventing and producing violence; L. McNeill:  Defensive teaching and classroom control. Case study #1 due.

Apr. 1  Personal choices: personality, content goals & instruction, social goals. Behavioral approaches to classroom management:  Behavior analysis and skillstreaming.  Wolfgang:  Solving discipline problems: Preface, Ch. 1, 7, & 8.

Apr. 6    Causes of misbehavior: Assertive Discipline (Canter & Canter) vs. Social Discipline (Dreikurs) Wolfgang Ch. 10, Ch. 4

Apr. 8    Moral development and democratic education: Judicious Discipline (Gathercoal).  Wolfgang Ch. 6.

Apr. 13    Special issues in classroom management: Sexual orientation and harassment.  Guest speaker: Bob Plumb. Eder, et al (1995): Crude comments and sexual scripts; other readings TBA.

Apr. 15    Choosing (and revising) a classroom discipline approach.  L. Colsant:  "Hey, man, why do we gotta take this . . .?" Wolfgang Ch 12 & 13. Last day to hand in rewrites of case study #1: Friday, April 16.
 




Apr. 19-May 14    Field experience.  Case Studies 2 & 3.

May 18    Debrief field experience.  Classroom management and adaptations review.

May 20-June 1   Various special topics: Guest speakers on: Teen pregnancy, parent conferences, suicide prevention, counseling students.  Readings TBA.

June 3  Case studies 2 & 3 due.
